Moving To Mexico
Why did we go to Mexico and How can anybody obtain their Mexican Residency.
September of 2021 we packed up our family once again into 4 little suitcases and headed off for another adventure. This time it was different. We knew in the depths of our heart that we would not be coming back to Canada anytime soon, as I heard the whisper, “2 years” in my heart.
I was becoming more and more unsettled in my spirit about the state of our dear country. With push back and some criticism about our decision, I was reminded about Noah.. I will hold this in my heart until the Lord returns as He is constantly asking us to do things the world doesn’t recognize
Our time in Mexico has been filled with highs and lows. The highs obviously being the beautiful weather beautiful people, Excursions, and visits with old and new friends. What lows, you ask? Well we miss our families, our friends, our church community. The language barrier, although we are trying hard, its a daily challenge and as our daily routine started to mirror more of the one we had in Canada, and homesickness started to set in, we really started to question if we should be staying in Mexico any longer… After the most recent events that took place in our Home Country Feb 2022, the decision was sealed in our hearts that we are exactly where the Lord wants us to be.
Now for the How…
I was watching a YouTube video one evening 2 months ago on how to obtained Mexican Residency since the whisper that we wouldn’t be going home anytime soon was resurfacing. [I have linked this below for you to watch] To make a long story short, for the FIRST TIME EVER in recent history of the Mexican government, You AUTOMATICALLY qualify to become a temporary resident without any proof of income. The ONLY requirement is that you have to have been the the country of Mexico, prior to 2020.
For Example, If you were in Mexico in 2019, and are just returning now in 2022, you automatically qualify. You must stay in Mexico for the duration of your Visa, and then within 14 days you will have your green card! We arrived September 19 2022, on a 6 month tourist Visa, so on March 20 ( 181 days) we submit our paper work, that has already been prepared and approved by the consulate, and 14 days after that we will have our Temporary Residency in Mexico.
You can choose 1, 2,3 or 4 year temporary residency. If you choose the 4 year plan, then at year 5 you will automatically qualify for Permanent residency.
The Benefits of permanent residency Vs Temporary
As a temporary resident you can open a bank account, travel the the “short”. lane at the airport and are always allowed entry into the country. As a Permanent resident, if you own a home and decide to sell it, you only have to pay 3% sales tax, VS the 30% you would have to pay as a tourist or temporary resident. Theses are the most relevant and exciting options in my opinion, oh yes, not to mention as long as you are in the country, on your residency, you are not required to pay tax in the country where you are a citizen(unless thats USA) USA has a clause that charges tax based off citizenship, not residency.
If you are not a resident and are not interested in becoming one, but you would like to buy a property, the best way to do that is in cash.Technically you are not allowed to take out a mortgage in Canada for foreign investments, although many people here that we know have pulled out funds against their current mortgage to purchase properties.
If you have any other questions about our residency process please feel free to message me any time!
