Merida Market 2021
We always trying to support the local farmers and the source of where a food comes from whether at home or travelling. I absolutely Loved going to this Market. The locals are very kind here in Merida, and Merida is actually deemed one of the Safest parts of Mexico to live.
Being amongst fresh local produce getting to talk to the locals in my very broken Spanish, albeit I am learning every day to try and communicate the best that I can in their language, which the locals really appreciate. I am making good progress too!
It is so important to me to teach the kiddos to respect other cultures and to also show them that food does not come from a grocery store, but that it is growing in our backyards, no matter the part of the world that we live in, local people eat local food that support the local economy.
In this part of Merida they take so much pride in preserving their culture that you are not even allowed to renovate or fix up the outside of the building without government permission as to try and preserve the natural culture and stone from the ancient people of old.
I have included a couple videos to better show case the local Merida Market, they’re not the best quality as I was trying to be discreet in filming as not to disrespect any of the locals.
These oranges (pictured below) on the left-hand side of this photo, there are 14 of them and they cost me 10 pesos which is around $0.55 Canadian.. fresh organic Mandarin oranges!
The most expensive thing I purchased was this gigantic avocado, 3x the size of my hand for 30 pesos, around $1.60 Canadian. The other half of the avocado is in the bowl where I made fresh guacamole with the onions, cilantro and lime.
The total cost of this haul, was under $7 Canadian!! Compared to the around $40 that we spent at Walmart the first week that we arrived.
It was so beautiful and humbling to walk through the market. This was probably the most fulfilling and satisfying thing of my day and I cant wait to go back again!
