Waiting for Rain in the Desert
Since arriving in the desert in Arizona in the middle of the summer, there is nothing I appreciate more than rain after a long dry spell. As I am getting to know the landscape here more and more, I have observed that the ground here is so dry, hot and cracked, [ i know right?!] and generally goes for a very long period of time without water. When the rain finally does fall, the water is not absorbed into the earth very well. In Arizona the soil does not absorb more than .25cm of water in any given rain storm so In order for the rain to absorb in to the ground, rainfall needs to happen in a gradual and consistent manner.
In our lives we also experience desert seasons. I am in one now, seasons without any metaphorical rain. Where you cant seem to catch a break. Maybe it’s a lingering health issue, a job loss, death of a loved one, financial strain, bankruptcy, divorce. In this desert seasons, i am aware as to not let my heart become so hard , like the soil, that when the rain finally does come, you cant absorb all that it has to offer you.
The Desert season is producing a patience and perseverance that is foundational to the next chapter of life. Hardening your heart during the difficult times, looks like, bitterness for not getting that Job Promotion, sitting in guilt and shame for not getting a chance to say goodby to your loved one who just passed, Secretly wanting someone to fail so you can feel accomplished, Jealousy, Fear, Regret.
Whatever difficult season you May be in, gradually and consciously work on the condition of your heart. Do not close your heart off. Do not fear. For when the rain comes , and it always does, the soil of you heart will be in prime condition to receive the blessing that comes with rain because you persevered through this hard season of life.
May you have the courage to walk boldly, and with Intention in your Desert season and with Faith that the rain will come.
